profile

Dr Sue Johnson is a globally respected clinical psychologist, researcher, author, and founder of Emotionally Focused Couples and Family Therapy (EFT), which is also now used to address emotional disorders in individuals (EFIT).

Sue Johnson has made immense contributions to clinical psychology throughout her distinguished career, bringing attachment theory (a developmental and relational theory of personality), to the forefront of psychotherapy.

She is the founding Director of the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT), a Distinguished Research Professor at Alliant University, San Diego, and Professor Emeritus at the University of Ottawa, Canada.

EFT was developed in the mid-80s as a method to help couples and families resolve conflicts and distress within relationships. The approach had a significant impact on family and couples therapy around the world, and her approach is considered the gold standard for empirically-validated couple interventions.

Dr Sue Johnson is the author of several influential books for both professionals and general readership, including Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love and The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy: Creating Connection, and most recently Attachment Theory in Practice: EFT with Individuals, Couples and Families and and A Primer for Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT).

She has received numerous awards and accolades during a career that has spanned several decades. In 2016 she was named Psychologist of the Year by the American Psychological Association (APA) and was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2017.
