How DBT Skills Help

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills focus on four main areas—Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness—to help individuals manage intense emotions and improve relationships. Key techniques include non-judgmental observation, self-soothing, reducing vulnerability to emotional swings, and assertive communication to balance acceptance and change.

Key Modules of DBT Skills

  • Mindfulness (Core Skills): Focusing on the present moment, observing, and describing experiences without judgment to achieve a "wise mind" (balancing logic and emotion).

  • Distress Tolerance: Techniques to cope with high-stress situations without resorting to self-destructive behaviors, such as the ACCEPTS (Activities, Contributing, Comparisons, Emotions, Pushing away, Thoughts, Sensations) or TIP (Temperature, Intense exercise, Paced breathing) techniques.

  • Emotion Regulation: Strategies for identifying, understanding, and managing intense emotions, including reducing vulnerability to "emotional mind".

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: Skills for navigating relationships, managing conflict, and maintaining self-respect, using strategies like DEAR MAN (Describe, Express, Assert, Reinforce, Mindful, Appear Confident, Negotiate).
